AN IN-DEPTH VIEW INTO THE WORLD OF WRISTWATCHES.
AN IN-DEPTH VIEW INTO THE WORLD OF WRISTWATCHES.
What's up Gentlemen? I'm Emmanuel from Teaching Men Everything and welcome to another blog post.
Wristwatches have to be the most underrated style pieces in a whole outfit. Maybe it's because they are relatively small and look irrelevant, people don't know what they are looking for when they are out to get a wristwatch, we feel like we can tell the time on our phones so they are not needed, or some other crazy reason.
I am here to tell you that it does not even matter if you are wearing a Prada custom suit, no important person or person of value will take you seriously if you show up for a function without a wristwatch or worse still, with a fake-branded or immature wristwatch (such as a G-shock).
This Blogpost will entail
- Proper definition of a Watch,
- Types and Examples of Movement pieces (watch engines),
- Maintenance of your watch,
- Qualities of a Good Wristwatch and finally,
- Straps to pull-off different outfits.
These are the basic things to know when you are out to get your next timepiece, and how to make sure they serve you as best and as long as they can. If that tickles your fancy, vamonos.
DEFINITION
This is a portable timepiece worn by a person around the wrist by what is known as a Strap. It got its name from the fact that it is worn on the wrist of the possessor, and above all other features, its main purpose is to keep track of time wherever you are.
TYPES
Wristwatches are classified into TYPES by the type of "Movement" or "Engine" that is found inside the casing of the wristwatch. There are three types:
=> Automatic Movement,
=> Mechanical Movement,
=> Quartz Movement.
1. Automatic Movement: Believed to be created in the 1770s, these are the characteristics of an Automatic Movement.
- They wind by kinetic energy. This means they wind or rotate according to the energy released during motion of the wrist of the wearer.
- They are commonly used by Luxury watch brands
- They lose count by some seconds and have to be wound at least twice a day.
- They require a great deal of maintenance and adjustment
- They are costly to produce and as such, they are expensive to purchase.
2. Mechanical Movement: Created in the 18th Century, these are their characteristics:
- They are made by a special selection of mechanisms that wind a small spring and as a result of that, it creates and releases energy to control, wind and unwind the wristwatch.
- They are seen only in Luxury watch brands
- They are the least accurate among the types of movements
- They lose count by a number of seconds and have to be wound at least once a day.
- They require a great deal of maintenance and adjustment
- They are costly to produce and are expensive to purchase
Despite all these, they are beautiful sights to behold, and only the owners and true experts know their real worth. They are truly works of craftsmanship.
Automatic and Mechanical watches are classic wristwatches and should be acquired as a reward for attaining a level of success or a goal for it to have more meaning to the owner.
3. Quartz Movement:
- They were unveiled on 25th December 1969
- They are Battery Powered. This means that the battery sends an electrical current through a Quartz Crystal, electrifying the crystals to cause the vibrations and winding
- They are your everyday regular wristwatches
- They are the most accurate out of all the movements
- They require minimal maintenance
- They are quite inexpensive to produce and as such are relatively cheap to purchase.
- They are the recent and most used type of movement.
MAINTENANCE
1. Automatic Movement:
- If worn daily, wind frequently
- Wipe with a soft damp cloth the night after every use.
- Wear frequently to keep it effective, because it relies on Kinetic Energy
- Never wound around your wrist
- Have it serviced by a professional from time to time.
2. Mechanical Movement:
- Clean as frequent as possible with a damp soft cloth
- Service and wound regularly
- Avoid Magnets
- Keep in Watch box when not in use.
3. Quartz Movement:
- When changing the battery, clean accumulated dirt and dust around the engine
- Pull crown when not in use, to conserve battery energy
- Replace the battery immediately it stops working
- Clean the frame and straps regularly. (Do NOT use water for Leather Straps)
- Store in a cool, clean and dry place, away from sunlight and other forms of radiation.
- Avoid Magnets.
Now, we move unto QUALITIES OF A GOOD WRISTWATCH
When you are ready to treat yourself to a brand new wristwatch, you'd want to keep these in mind.
1. Material: The frame or case of your wristwatch, should at least be made of not ordinary, but Stainless Steel. Other materials are Titanium and Ceramic; but compared to Stainless Steel, they are quite expensive. So, Stainless Steel is your guy when you are going for quality but inexpensive wristwatch.
2. Coating: A good watch should have PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) coating over the Gold, Rosegold, Silver or Black coat. This strengthens the coloured coat and prevents it from discolouring easily.
3. Glass: The Glass screen, if you have enough money should be made of sapphire glass. This prevents scratch to an extent and provides the quality of a scratch-free use. Cheaper glass screens made from Crystals or Mineral will suffice for a fairly inexpensive watch.
4. Movement: As we discussed, if you are going for every day any whether wristwatch, go for the one with Quartz Movement; but if you are going for a more classic expensive watch, go for a Mechanical or an Automatic Movement.
5. Water Resistance: Watches of nowadays are to a particular extent, water-resistant. This does not mean you should put on your wristwatch when you want to go take a shower, this is just for protection from unforeseen unavoidable situations like rainfall.
6. Strap: Now this, this is actually to an extent your own preference. I used "to an extent" there because I'm indirectly going to influence your decision. I will tell you the type of strap that fits the particular occasion, and then you can pick the strap yourself, sounds fun right? Now, these are the straps for specific occasions.
- If you are dealing with formal wears, go for leather straps. The colour of the leather is dependent on the colour of your shoes and belts.
- If you are dealing with casual wears, pick either leather, metal or bracelets when you are wearing trousers, and bracelets or metal when you are dealing with shorts.
- If you are going for a sporty vibe, or you are actually going to perform a form of sporting activity, rubber straps are your go-to.
7. Clean Finish: This has to be the most important on this list. This is when every characteristic listed above come together to form a complete, clean, beautiful, comfortable and most importantly, accurate watch.
8. Brand Name (Optional): If you've seen a model with all the specifications above, go for it; the name of the brand is not necessary. But if you've got some extra cash to spare, have at it. Here, you and your pocket have 100% control, go hard.
In conclusion, I know I have exposed a few secrets into the world of timepieces and I sincerely hope you have taken at least one thing from here that will help you make boss moves. Go ahead and build your collection of epic watches, your outfit will thank you.
That's it from me for now, see you Sunday.
